I Grew Up on This Heinz Sauce, and I Still Order It From England

There's a particular jar in my mum's kitchen cupboard that I never thought twice about until I moved to the US — Heinz Tomato, Grana Padano & Mascarpone pasta sauce. Weeknight dinner, no fuss, done in the time it takes the pasta to boil. I assumed every country got some version of it. They don't.

American supermarkets carry plenty of Heinz — ketchup, beans, the odd soup — but not this. It turns out Heinz's pasta sauce range barely exists in the US at all; the American side of the company has built its business almost entirely around condiments, not jarred pasta sauces. So there's no US equivalent to reach for instead. There's just nothing there.

What it actually tastes like

Creamy rather than sharp — the Grana Padano adds a nutty savouriness and the mascarpone rounds it out, so it eats more like a restaurant carbonara-adjacent sauce than a basic marinara. Heat it, stir it through pasta, add a bit more cheese if you're feeling generous. That's the whole method.

How I actually use it

• Stirred through pasta with extra Grana Padano on top
• As a base for a lazy baked pasta when I want it to look like more effort
• Spooned over roast chicken when I've run out of ideas
